Nottingham Academy

Art and Photography

I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.

Introduction to Art and Photography

At Nottingham Academy we have designed a curriculum for Art which is structured around creativity, opportunities, and character charter.

Our philosophy of the curriculum is:

We aim to guarantee that students are encouraged and can produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experience, are skilled in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art forms, craft, and design techniques. Students can evaluate and analyse creative works by using the language of art, craft, and design. They can refine and modify their works and improve their skills. They can understand the context about great artists, craft makers and designers, and have the knowledge of historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our key stage 3 art and design curriculum has been designed so learning is sequenced so students can build on their practice. It will allow students to be engage, inspire, and be challenged. It will educate and develop students in the necessary techniques to be able to produce and explore creative works, ideas, think creatively and critically. The curriculum is designed to ensure that all students have the correct foundations in artistic techniques so they can build upon their own skills. Once this is established, they will be working on theme-based projects that will support and help develop their knowledge and sequence their learning to give them a wide range of depth and experiences in a range of different mediums. Students will have opportunities to develop social skills and make the right choices for them and be proud of what they produce.

Our aim at Nottingham Academy is to provide a highly engaging and diverse curriculum that challenges and promotes individuality, self-worth, and creative thinkers. The Art and design team at NAC work together to build student’s communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Our curriculum provides opportunities to develop resilience, confidence, and to enable students to negotiate the challenges of life with an enriched understanding and develop a widened knowledge of the world around them.

Assessments are used to embed skills and celebrate the creativity of our students. Our students are given feedback to ensure they improve and develop their skills and become ready for taking on the challenges of the art programme at key stage 4.

Art and Photography allows students to engage and succeed through a variety of topics and themes. At NAC we celebrate and explore a range of art forms from different cultures to contemporary works to engage our students. We use a variety of mediums, so all students can respond to the learning outcomes and be proud of their creativity.

We aim to offer a range of opportunities for trips at KS3 to galleries within Nottingham which include Nottingham Contemporary and the Art Exchange. There will be opportunities for workshops by local artists that will take place on site at the NAC. At KS4 trips will began again to the Yorkshire sculpture park and to London’s Iconic galleries for KS5 in February.

There are opportunities for students to have guidance to talk to professional and be inform on making the right choice when selecting subjects at further education and universities regarding their future careers.
