Science is important as it enables us to determine explanations for the behaviour of the universe and everything within it.

In this vain, it is the science department’s aims to:

1.  Provide learners with both the skills and knowledge to question the world around them.

2.  Provide relevant and inspiring scientific teaching and learning.

3.  Provide choice and flexibility in order for all abilities to pursue learning in science.

Across the key stages, our learners can expect to develop skills in predicting, hypothesizing, communicating, organising and analysing. They will develop an inquisitive, open mind alongside an appreciation that science may have social, economic, political and ethical implications.  Whilst developing the skills and knowledge for our scientists of the future such skills are transferable to employment opportunities as vast and diverse as accounting to engineering.  

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils are taught a range of topics in years 7, 8 and 9.  Year 7 learning in science begins with the ‘How to be a good scientist’ topic and continues with topics in chemistry, physics and biology to provide the scientific knowledge that is built upon in years 8 and 9.  Learning is developed through both theory and practice.  Assessment begins with a baseline test in year 7 and continues at regular intervals throughout the year with formative and summative assessments.  Towards the end of the key stage in year 9, pupils begin to develop the skills and knowledge required for their choice of key stage 4 course. 

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils have the flexibility to choose to follow BTEC or GCSE courses in science, based on their current levels of attainment.   

We currently follow the AQA programme of study for GCSE and learners have the option to study the GCSE double award or separate GCSE’s in physics, chemistry and biology.

We also offer the BTEC First award in applied science.  ‘Principles of Applied Science’ and ‘Application of Science’ are taught over two years.  Successful completion of the course requires assignment based work and an externally assessed examination in year 10 and year 11.

Yr 13 units:

  • Examination - Commun ication, Homeostasis and Energy 15%
  • Examination - Control, Genomes and Environment 25%
  • Coursework - Practical Skills in Biology 2 10%

Chemistry GCE A-Level (OCR)

Yr 12 units:

  • Examination - Atoms, Bonds and Groups 15%
  • Examination - Chains, Energy, Resources 25%
  • Coursework - Practical Skills in Chemistry 1 10%

 Yr 13 units:

  • Examination - Rings, Polymers, Analysis 15%
  • Examination - Equilibria, Energetics and Elements 25%
  • Coursework - Practical Skills in Chemistry 2 10%

Phyiscs GCE A-Level (OCR)

Yr 12 units:

  • Examination - Mechanics 15%
  • Examination - Electrons, Waves and Photons 25%
  • Coursework - Practical Skills in Physics 1 10%

Yr 13 units:

  • Examination - The Newtonian World 15%
  • Examination - Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics 25%
