Media and Film Department


Media Studies is a very important subject, ultimately combining aspects of Politics, Sociology, History and Economics. It encourages creativity, teaches analytical skills and introduces students to critical ways of thinking about the world around them.

The aims of the department are to encourage students to work independently on a variety of tasks and be able to articulately express themselves through analysis and creation of media texts. A further aim is to promote working as part of a team.

It is hoped that through studying media and/or film students’ experiences are widened and challenged – our world is now saturated by digital media and its impact needs to be considered not just taken for granted. The subject requires students to consider carefully what they see around them and question the truth in the representations we encounter.

The vision for the subject is to broaden and overlap other curriculum areas within the context of media and film – this is now a major part of our communication and culture and could be incorporated more widely for further analysis. 

There are a wide variety of employers that would value the skills achieved through studying this subject. 

Key Stage 4

AQA GCSE Media (Single Award)

Unit 1 is externally assessed and requires candidates to investigate a pre-released media topic and to undertake research and planning in order to respond to four tasks (40% of grade). Unit 2 (60%of grade) comprises three controlled assessments which require candidates to build on their understanding of the media key concepts for their own pre-production planning, leading to a realised production for Assignment 3. The four concepts underpinning the subject are Media Language, Representation, Audience and Institution. A variety of texts from horror films to the hip hop music genre are analysed to understand these concepts. Unit 1 is assessed at the end of the second year of the course.

Ed Excel BTEC First Extended Certificate Creative Digital Media Production

75% = internally assessed coursework comprising of five units which are assessed throughout the two year course. Units will change periodically but will generally focus around Digital Moving Image, Digital Audio Production and Graphic Design along with two core units.

25% = externally assessed through two examinations; Unit 1 examined at the end of the first year, Unit 8 examined mid-way through the second year of the course.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Sixth Form Star – a regular newspaper designed and created by Sixth Form students.

Aiming to run an animation club for KS3 students and a broadcast audio club for KS3-4.

We take part in National Schools Film Week where we view films at a local independent cinema involving guest speakers. Previously we have attended the National Media, Film and Photography Museum to work on Animation projects and often work closely with the E-Learning Centre in Nottingham. These widen students’ experiences and often enhance practical productions.
