At The Nottingham Academy we have embraced an enquiry based approach to science which encourages pupils to investigate and explain why things happen in the world around them.
The pupils develop a variety of life skills such as how to hypothesise, predict, observe, measure, record, conclude, evaluate, and justify the conclusions they make. Pupils become adept at making their own judgements on claims which are made in the media, using a variety of sources of information. We hope that all pupils will become independent investigators and thinkers, who can look at the world around them and determine how science shapes their lives.
Science Curriculum
During Years 7 and 8 pupils will learn the key scientific principles in an ‘Applications of Science' approach. Completing units of work which introduce them to the applications of science within the real world. This includes unit of study on The Olympics, The Jungle, The health Centre and The Rock Concert. In Year 9 pupils will further develop their scientific enquiry skills and consolidate their knowledge in preparation for Key Stage 4.
There are several different pathways of study for pupils at Key Stage 4; this includes a traditional triple science option and a double science GCSE awarded, both following the AQA syllabus. We also offer pupils the opportunity to study for the Edexcel BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science; BTEC pupils are internally assessed by the class teacher as they complete each assignment.
Year 12 and 13 A/S and A/2 Level courses are modular: OCR Modular Sciences: Biology and OCR Modular Sciences Chemistry and OCR Modular Science Physics. These are offered at the Sixth Form on our Greenwood Road site.
Our aims within the Science curriculum are:
- to provide a balanced science education for all children who have equal access to the range of science experiences, such that they reach their full potential.
- to stimulate an interest and enjoyment in science so academic achievement and expectations may be raised;
- to encorporate ‘how science works' into all aspects of science teaching, as a way of developing pupils' awareness and appreciation of science in their lives;
- to develop the skills of analysis and problem solving;
- to enhance awareness of past influences, present and likely future implications of science on education, work, leisure and the world environment; and
- to enable pupils to satisfy the demands of the National Curriculum.
