Religious Education is an integral subject within the curriculum as it creates tolerance and respect for other people's beliefs, aiding community cohesion.
At the Nottingham Academy RE is a popular and successful subject. The department's staff have a genuine love of their subject and enthuse pupils through imaginative and exciting teaching. They are effective classroom practitioners who insist upon the highest standards of achievement and behaviour.
All pupils take RE throughout Key Stage 3 and it is an option subject at GCSE, with pupils choosing either Religious and Ethical Studies or Islamic Studies. At A-Level pupils can choose Philosophy, Ethics and Theology or Philosophy and Islam from a number of other Sixth Form courses.
The study of RE, particularly at GCSE and A-Level, shows universities and employers that pupils understand the world, life and people - every job needs this kind of awareness. Furthermore, RE not only provides pupils with academic skills but it also gives them life skills by preparing them for their life in the present and future.
Pupils acquire a range of skills from studying RE. They learn about religious and non-religious belief, but also how to apply the positive aspects studied to their own lives. RE also develops written and verbal communication, problem solving, researching and the deployment of information, constructing solid arguments to support certain viewpoints. Pupils learn to work with others and improve their own learning, performance and understanding of the mind, society, the world and spiritual aspects of human kind.
