Careers and Employability
"65% of today's students will be employed in jobs that don't yet exist." Nottingham Academy recognises the importance of outstanding careers and employability provision to ensure our pupils are prepared for the ever changing world of work.
Our careers and employability programme gives students opportunities to develop transferable skills, ensuring that they are fully supported to make informed choices about the next stage in their education, employment or training.
Our aim for all of our young people is that they go on to lead happy, successful and fulfilling careers in the future.
Every young person leaving Nottingham Academy will have experienced at least four purposeful and impact measured employer interventions by the end of Key Stage 4, and an additional four by the end of Key Stage 5.
Studies have shown that young people who can recall four or more employer contacts whilst in education are five times more likely to continue in education, training or secure employment.
At key transition points pupils will receive advice and guidance to help inspire them towards further study and enable them to make informed decisions whenever choices are open to them.
We are committed to ensuring our provision of careers and employability education meets the requirements of the Gatsby Benchmarks. Our careers and employability strategy is reviewed at the end of every academic year using data collected from student and stakeholder feedback as well as a review of our post 16 and post 18 destination data.
Good careers guidance will be characterised by the following eight benchmarks:
A stable careers programme
Nottingham Academy has a long standing, annual programme of embedded careers education and guidance that is known and understood by all in our Academy community.
Learning from career and labour market information
Every pupil and their parents will have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will have access to an informed adviser who will provide support and enable them to make the best use of available information.
Addressing the needs of each pupil
Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support will be tailored to the needs of each pupil. Nottingham Academy’s careers programme will embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
Linking curriculum learning to careers
All teachers will link curriculum with careers. STEM subject teachers will highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths, through involvement in STEM events and competitions regionally and nationally.
Encounters with employers and employees
Every pupil will have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This will be provided through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes. Nottingham Academy is proud of the existing partnerships with have with many of Nottingham's largest employers including Capital One, DHL, Experian Ikano and intu.
Experiences of workplaces
Every pupil will have the opportunity to have experiences of the workplace through world of work projects, workplace visits, employer shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities and expand their networks. Examples of these opportunities include the Business in Classrooms project in Year 8 and the Ikano Discovery Day.
Encounters with further and higher education
Nottingham Academy has strong partnerships with a number of local and national further education and higher education providers. All pupils have the opportunity to visit providers and attend in school activities delivered by outreach teams, one example of this is the IntoUniversity programme delivered by University of Nottingham. All pupils will have access to information on the next stage of learning this will include both academic and vocational routes including apprenticeships as well as learning in colleges, universities and in the workplace.
Every pupil will have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers advisor. Interviews will be made available whenever significant study or career choices are being made.
Nottingham Academy has a statutory duty to provide independent and impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance for all Year 8-13 pupils, which is intended to inspire and motivate pupils to fulfil their potential. Schools are required to help every pupil develop high aspirations and consider a broad and ambitious range of careers. Inspiring every pupil through more real-life contacts with the world of work can help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.
