A Level Accountancy 

Course Length 2 years
Entry Requirements 5 or more GCSE grades A* to C or levels 9 to 5,
including level 4 in English and level 6 in mathematics.
Who will this course interest? 
 

If you are interested in further study or a career in accounting, banking or business, this course is a great choice. But even if you plan on becoming a professional musician or technician it is good to know about accounting. With accounting skills you could end up working in just about any area you choose.

Course content 
 

Students must demonstrate a good understanding of the double entry model and accounting principles and concepts as these form the foundation of all financial accounting techniques. You will also need to demonstrate quantitative skills that are relevant to the subject.


Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the formulae used for accounting purposes and make calculations to inform judgements, solve problems and make decisions. Students must focus on developing their ability to write effectively so that they can report to stakeholders, making logical arguments and providing sound judgements based on analysis of available evidence taking account of financial and non-financial factors.


You will need to keep up to date with financial news including announcements concerning the performance of leading UK businesses, and be given the opportunity to investigate their published accounts.

Assessment Structure 

100% Externally assessed examination – 2 papers, 3 hours each.

  • Section A has 10 multiple choice questions and several short answer questions. The section is worth 30 marks.
  • Section B has two structured questions each worth 20 marks. The section is worth 40 marks.
  • Section C has two extended answer questions each worth 25 marks. The section is worth 50 marks.
What could this course lead to?
 

Degree courses at university include accounting, finance and business. Previous students have gained apprenticeships in accounting, being employed (and paid) by a firm whilst working towards a degree.

What could this course lead to?
 

This course is a useful preparation for many degree courses, and past students have gone on to study business related subjects and many other subjects at university. It is also a useful preparation for employment, especially for those planning to work in the business sector.

Who will this course interest?
 

If you are interested in learning more about the world of business and like to work in a practical way, this course will interest you. This course develops the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding in a vocational context, building a portfolio of work. It is a practical qualification which will help you to progress to either higher education or employment in the broad business sector.

Course overview
 

The course provides a foundation for students to develop business skills and is engaging and practical. There are 5 units in total of which 50% is externally assessed. You will be taught through a mixture of group work, teacher led sessions and independent study to develop an understanding of how to apply subject knowledge to practical and theoretical problems. The qualification is vocational and is geared towards the skills needed in industry and aimed at universities and employers.
